There are treatment options when diet and exercise doesn’t work
Obesity is a chronic disease and those with obesity should be offered treatment. Unfortunately, many people think that the solution is to eat less and exercise more. This is overly simplistic and fails to take into consideration the complex range of causes.
SCALE is a Prediabetes and Obesity study that provides evidence that the use of pharmacotherapy achieves 10% weight loss in one in three patients. The SCALE study involved 3,700 patients randomized to Liraglutide 3.0mg and lifestyle versus lifestyle alone. Those using the drug plus lifestyle resulted in 33% of patients losing 10% weight and 15% of patients losing 15% weight. This approach also reduced the risk of developing diabetes by 80%.

Where lifestyle options and pharmacotherapy haven’t work bariatric surgery is an option. Research shows that bariatric surgery delivers 25% weight loss for 80% of people and can put type 2 diabetes in remission.
